“Fried PorkChop With Rice” is a very basic and traditional choice of bento menu in Taiwan. The pronunciation of Mandarin is “pai gu fan”. If you come to Taiwan, you can’t miss this classic food. And today I want to recommend all of you a super famous restaurant of “pai gu fan” in North Taiwan. The restaurant name is “DARK PALACE TAIWANESE GOURMET”. The restaurant pronunciation of Mandarin is “hei dian pai gu”. It located in Danshui of New Taipei City. (* Danshui=Tamsui=Tamshui are the same place, different translation only.)

You may find the same 2 restaurants in Danshui. One is near the MRT: Tamsui Station, about 5 mins walk, a new branch. And the origination is located in a little bit remote place; about 2.4 km need take around 30 mins walk or 10 mins bus time from Tamsui MRT station. But if you want to go to “Fisherman’s Wharf” for sightseeing, this restaurant is just on your way; I highly recommend all of you can go to this restaurant to have a lunch or dinner.

They have English restaurant name so it’s easy to find it. And all prices are clear showed on the menu. I like it because you don’t worry the local person will charge high price for foreigners. (I have this kind of bad experiences in other countries… so poor). So here only one thing is inconvenient for you: NO ENGLISH SERVICE. So I will give you clear instruction about traffic way, how to order, Mandarin pronunciation for each cuisine… etc.

And you can also find English version menu as following which I special made for foreigner reference.

No English service but I suggest you need to go, so exciting, right? Trust me; one of the joys of travel is the adventure. : )

The restaurant has traditional Chinese design. I think maybe those waiters can’t have good English communication with you but they are so friendly. (English version menu as above picture.)

This restaurant also has many hot / cold beverages choose, on the back side of menu. (English version menu as above picture.)

Please follow the steps as below for ordering, it’s very easy to do:

Find your table -- > Menu is put into basket hang on wall -- > Write the table number on the menu -- > Choose the one you like and tick on the menu -- > Wait in line at the check-out counter -- > Waiter will double check with you about your order items and table number (*if you have no idea how to tick on the menu, you can show my blog pictures to them at this moment.) -- > Pay in advance (*you can see the total price showed in front of the screen) -- > You will get one order list like following picture -- > Put the list on the table -- > Wait dish up

This is the order list; you need to put it on the table. It can help waitress deliver right items for each table.

“Fried PorkChop With Rice” is the most famous item in this restaurant, NT$130 for large-sized, around 4.3 USD. The Mandarin pronunciation is “pai gu fan”. If you want to have large-sized bowl of rice, you can say “dai wan pai gu fan”, dai wan means large-sized. If you want to have small-sized bowl of rice, you can say “shiau wan pai gu fa”, shiau wan means small-sized.

The entree of large-sized is one full and extra 1/3 piece pork chop. The standard sides are egg, pickled cabbage and stir-fry dried tofu over the hot rice. The thick pork chop absorbs the special and secret sauce. It’s a simple cuisine but taste good.

No service charge and you don’t need to leave a tip.

I really like this kind of fried pork chop with no thick flour. It’s a wonderful taste memory of my childhood because my mom always cooked with the same way.

In Taiwan, there are many different kind of cooking style of pork chop. But in those bento shops, it’s not easy to find thick meat with no thick flour.

(NT$35, around 1.2 USD)

This is “Soft-boiled Golden Egg”, around 1.2 USD for one order. The mandarin pronunciation is “huang jin tang shin dan”. You can feel the yolk very rich; it can smoothly through your throat. Taste good, recommendation.

This egg price is a little bit higher than average. But it’s not easy to find in night market so you can taste it with this good opportunity. One more thing, it’s a cold dish, suitable for every seasons.

This one is “braised soup noodles”, NT$110 for small-sized, around 3.7 USD. The mandarin pronunciation is “da lu mian”. If you want to have large-sized bowl, you can say “dai wan da lu mian”, dai wan means large-sized. If you want to have small-sized bowl, you can say “shiau wan da lu mian”, shiau wan means small-sized.

This is a briny soup noodles, cooked into a cornstarch-heavy broth with fragments of egg, wood ear, carrot and pork. In Taiwan, it’s very popular and classic type of soup noodles. I really love this soup because there will be fragrance spread over your tongue, taste so good.

The slippery flour pasta and pork will swim in your mouth. It is yum and good hot soup, especially keeping warm in cold weather. Enjoy it.
